सेबी एक तरह का मार्केट रेग्यूलेटर है। सेबी यानी सिक्योरिटीज एंड एक्सचेंज बोर्ड ऑफ इंडिया। इसकी स्थापना 12 अप्रैल, 1992 को सिक्योरिटीज एंड एक्सचेंज बोर्ड ऑफ इंडिया एक्ट के तहत की गई थ। सेबी का मुख्यालय मुंबई में है जबकि इसके उत्तरी, पूर्वी, दक्षिणी तथा पश्चिमी क्षेत्रीय कार्यालय क्रमशः नई दिल्ली, कोलकाता, चेन्नई और अहमदाबाद में इयके वर्तमान चेयरमैन यू.के.सिन्हा है


क्यों जरूरत पड़ी सेबी की?
शेयर बाजार में जब सेबी जैसी कोई नियामक संस्था नहीं थी तो उस समय ब्रोकर्स और शेयर बाजार के खिलाड़ी मनमानी किया करते थे। बाजार में कब क्या होगा इसकी स्थिति के बारे कोई भी पूर्वानुमान नहीं लगाया जा सकता था। आम निवेशको को दलालों के चंगुल से मुक्त कराने के लिए एक किसी ऐसे संगठन की स्थापना की सिफारिश की गई, जो बाजार की सभी गतिविधियों पर नजर रखे और किसी गड़बड़ी को फैलाने वाले व्यक्ति या कंपनी को दण्डात्मक कार्यवाही द्वारा प्रतिबंधित करे और जुर्माना लगाए।
